My Experience
Currently, I attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I major in Journalism. My experience in the field is broad. From behind-the-scenes production work to building shows for TV, and reporting on news and sports stories.
My journey into this field was unexpected. When I was younger, I used my free time to cut and mix music for my dance team. I taught myself Final Cut Pro and iMovie because learning those tools interested and engaged me, boosting my confidence and giving me a real passion for editing. Suddenly, I had a purpose, and I strived to develop this talent.
And today, I am engaged in journalism. It is not easy, and, as a result, I love it. Finding stories; making tales come to life; broadcasting sporting events are all activities that I enjoy doing — and that is journalism. My time at the University of Illinois has exposed me to a deeper passion for the craft, and I learn something new every day.
My job with Fighting Illini Productions and Big Ten Network’s Student U program allows me to not only work behind the scenes with putting on full broadcast productions for Illinois sporting games but gives me real broadcast experience with decorated coaches and players. Learning how to work with video, audio and production equipment is exciting. When I go to broadcast or finish an interview, it’s rewarding. I feel confident in the multimedia work I produce.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is creating and producing a new sports-focused talk show, Illini Sports Night, for the University. More of my achievements in sports media include being the first woman to work with and publish an article on SB Nation’s “The Champaign Room” which focuses on coverage of Illinois sports. I am now its beat reporter for Illinois Baseball and Illinois Football. In addition to this, I have worked with the University's first morning show, Good Morning Illini, for over a year now. Through this show I do everything from on-camera work to producing packages, and providing new ideas for the show. Those skills led me to being a producer for the show this coming fall. More importantly, these achievements have painted a bigger picture than I could have ever imagined for myself as a young girl.
